Two laws you cannot break are Newton’s Third Law of Motion and … The Law of Unintended Consequences Author: Tony Colle Thought: The “Uncaused Cause”? Cause and Effect. It’s a Law of Nature. Each cause has one or more effects and each effect becomes the cause of yet another set of effects. Another way of saying that is that every effect had at least one cause. Map them all backward: “This was caused by that which was the effect of this other cause which was caused by …” and many scientists will tell you that you just discovered the Big Bang – the birth of our universe.
But where did the Big Bang come from? Here you have what will become the whole universe contained in a giant blob the size of your fingernail (how’s that for an oxymoron? unless, of course, you have really, really big fingernails) that one day decided for some inexplicable reason to explode. In one split second all time, matter and energy that is now contained in the universe came into existence. Sounds good but could someone tell me where that “cosmic egg” came from? Was it always there? If so, there’s a concept of eternity for you: something that had no beginning and we’re not sure if it (the Universe) will have an end or not.
Some people say that it didn’t always exist but, just as our Universe is expanding, one day due to gravity it may stop and then start contracting. Our genesis, they’ll say, came from a former Universe that had expanded and then contracted into our version of the Cosmic Egg.
OK, then, where did that Universe come from? Another Egg? Then where did that one come from, and then where did that one come from, and then, … You get the picture. It’s another slightly different picture of eternity, but eternity none the less.
So, if every cause has an effect but yet there was something that was not caused but has been in existence since the “beginning” (whatever that means), that something would be an “Uncaused Cause” since nothing made it happen. If that Cause has intelligence and got everything started (and many believe keeps it going), that Cause would be outside of time and space since time and space were created in the Big Bang.
If we’re honest, it’s very difficult to escape the notion that some “Cause” outside of time and space got things going and maybe keeps them going today. To many that Cause is God and the only real question is: Did God create the Universe and everything in it with some kind of a Divine Plan? If so, it may be wise to discover your part in this Divine Plan. After all, if God is outside of time and space, God will be around for a lot longer than any of us and we may find ourselves having to explain what we did with this Universe given to us.
